Edge-AI and secure data protection and privacy – an Industry Perspective
Co-hosted by Seán Kelly MEP, Ireland South, the second episode in the “The EU AI Act – an Industry Perspective” series hosted by Xperi (Ireland) will take place on 28 October at 13:00 CEST.
In this episode we will discuss how AI at the ‘edge’ and ‘Privacy by Design’ are fundamental to protecting the rights of citizens and how, if regulated appropriately, will lead to a new era of innovation.
The session will be opened by Seán Kelly and Gabriel Cosgrave, General Manager EMEA at Xperi.
Following their interventions, Prof. Barry O’Sullivan who will lead a panel discussion with:

Further sessions in the “The EU AI Act – an Industry Perspective” series are scheduled to take place during November and December 2021 and will delve deeper into the detail to provide recommendations for decision makers and parliamentarians as they debate the Act.
Seán KELLY MEP (LinkedIn)
Seán Kelly has been a member of the European Parliament for Ireland South since 2009. He is the current leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament, and part of the European People's Party (EPP) Group. Seán sits on the European Parliament's Committees on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), International Trade (INTA) and Human Rights (DROI). He is a member of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with the South Africa, and the Delegation for relations with countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Seán has been heavily involved in the digital economy, with priorities including the establishment of high-speed networks, bolstering the digital single market, bridging the digital divide and providing better targeted support for ICT research and innovation. Seán served as Rapporteur for the ITRE Committee on the proposal for the General Data Protection Regulation, which represented the largest reform of data privacy law in the last two decades. As a result of his work in the area of data protection, cyberbullying and as Ambassador for CoderDojo, Seán was voted 2014 MEP of the Year for Digital Agenda and for his continued work Seán has also just received a nomination for The Industry, Research & Innovation Award at the MEP Awards 2020.

Alessandra has over 10 years’ experience in research and innovation gained whilst working in academic and commercial environments. Professor Barry O'Sullivan, FEurAI, FIAE, FICS, MRIA, holds the Chair in Constraint Programming at University College Cork in Ireland. He is the founding Director of the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at UCC, Principal Investigator at the Confirm Centre for Smart Manufacturing, and Director of the Science Foundation Ireland’s Centre for Research Training in AI. He is an Adjunct Professor at Monash University, Australia. Professor O’Sullivan was vice chair of the European Commission High-Level Expert Group on AI and a scientific advisor to AI Watch, an initiative of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre tasked with monitoring the uptake of AI in Europe. He is an award-winning academic working in the fields of artificial intelligence, constraint programming, and operations research. He also works in AI and data ethics, as well as public policy-making related to AI. He has a keen interest in the commercialisation of AI and is involved in a number of startup companies. Professor O’Sullivan is a Fellow and a past President of the European AI Association, Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the Irish Computer Society, and Member of the Royal Irish Academy.
